South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands

South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands are a collection of exceptionally remote islands in the Southern Atlantic. Although considered as one entity they represent two physically distinct island groups, with the South Georgia cluster ranging between 560 and 800km west of the South Sandwich Island arc (Figure 1).

The South Sandwich Islands (SSI) are located in the Scotia Sea (Southern Ocean), within the South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands Marine Protected Area. However, the biodiversity of the archipelago remains poorly studied, whilst climate change has the potential for wide-ranging impacts in the Antarctic and Subantarctic regions.

AREA AND POPULATION. South Georgia lies 800 miles south-east of the Falkland Islands and has an area of 1,450 sq. miles. The South Sandwich Islands are 470 miles south-east of South Georgia and have an area of 130 sq. miles. There has been no permanent population in South Georgia since the whaling station at Leith was abandoned in 1966.
